58 years of independence
"The best of our nation is still to be written."
On 12 March 1968, our island Mauritius made a bold bet: to believe that a small island, rich in its differences, could become a strong nation. Not by size, not by power, but by intelligence, hard work, and the ability to live together.
Since then the road has never been perfect. No country’s is. But independence has never been a medal to hang on the wall once a year. It is a demand. A vigilance. A collective responsibility.
Because to love your country is not to idealise it. It is to want it to live up to what it could be.
Today, we can be proud of what Mauritius has become. But the finest way to honour our independence is still the simplest — and the most demanding: to refuse mediocrity, defend integrity, and build a country even better than the one we inherited.
Because the best of our nation is still to be written…
